Studying the Bible like a zombie!

The reason I title this blog “studying the Bible like a zombie” is that they do things just for the sake of doing it! But unlike zombies, you have a purpose for everything you do.

I was kidding with an old friend of mind about using the NKJV; I was telling him every other version was false, water down version! 😀 I was yanking his chain because I use different versions to have a better understanding of a text! But after our conversation, I thought how important it is to study and to meditate on the passage you are reading! As a young man, I believe I read the Bible many times over, but I didn’t have a deep understanding of what I learned. I liken it to when you take a drive, and you don’t remember how you arrived at your destination.
It can be a scary feeling because your brain goes on a sort of autopilot and takes you to your destination. This is how I would read the Bible, I would read a passage, and I couldn’t tell you what I just looked through! Peter tells brother Timothy to study God’s word:
2 Timothy 2:15
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

For example, I was reading Matthew chapter five, and it was saying to love your enemies. I was with the feeling of love, but when it came to Matthew 5:48, where the NKJV says to be perfect as the Father was perfect I became discouraged! There’s no way I could be perfect! But with the help of different versions and commentaries, I learned ” mature” is a more correct word for “perfect.” This is something I would’ve just missed before.
